ok in theses next pictures you can see how we fit a standard stern Gear including a new weld Boss all parts are replaced for like for like on this Boat and it includes the engine re-alinement program
in the above picture you can see the Weld Boss Has already been removed ready for the instillation of a new weld Boss in some cases such as this Boat the Weld boss was incompatible with a new stern Gear and therefore has been removed. in the bottom picture you can see the new weld Boss has been weld Tacked into place ready for the instillation and set up of the new stern gear in the next picture you can see we have replaced the old R&D Flexible cupling and a new Brass split half cupling. I would rather see and fit a centerflex but we only fit what the client would like but R&D Flexible cuplings are ok as long as the engine is in total alinement however your engine can and will move out of alinement which will be the course of Excessive wear, centerflex bearings can move with the Engine reducing the Excessive wear.
in this picture the holding plate and Brass packer unit is being fitted all our parts are fitted to size this minimises the risk of being out of alinement.
in this picture you can see just how far the engine is out of alinement the shaft size is 1.1/2" so you can tell the engine is over 1" out of alinement, this is the course of Excessive wear and must always be re-aliened before the Stern Gear is fully welded, all these parts are lose at the moment so that every thing can be moved into place just take a look at the next few pictures as you will see the engine being moved back into alinement
ok below you can know see the engine has been correctly brought back into alinement this will reduce Excessive wear and will not need to be replaced for Many years to come.
now the holding plate is welded with an up-hand weld for Extra strength either side to the inner swim area.
out side we place a new section of plate over the new weld boss to the out side of swim area this is gives us Grater support to the weld boss as we can weld the boss in two places rather than just around the boss.
once all parts have been welded in place we then take all parts apart to seal threads at each end of this Brass tube
Ive found that most Greaser units fitted to boats are always loose so we always Tap our Greaser unit fixing plate so that the bolts can be easily tightened with just the one spanner from the top of the unit this is just for customer ease of self maintenance
in this picture you can see the stern gear has been re-installed with sealant in place it is all then bolted together the Gland-Packing is now inserted into his into place in the video you can see the engine this stern Gear was Pass by qualified British Marine surveyor Craig Allen
